City and county officials meet
with
FEMA to discuss disaster
assistance

On Friday, April 4, Mark
Rueschmann with FEMA was in Mississippi County to
fill out the preliminary report to see if
Mississippi would qualify for disaster assistance
for infrastructure damage from the recent flooding.

Gasoline seepage, odor returns
to site of 2003 leak
JEFFERSON CITY — The Missouri
Department of Natural Resources dispatched an
emergency responder Saturday to investigate the
return of petroleum vapors and gasoline to a
Mississippi County convenience store that had been
the site of a 17,000-gallon fuel leak in 2003. (more)

Dogwood-Azalea Festival

There have been lots of
activities going on at the Charleston Chamber office
in anticipation of the festival April 17-20! We have
a new fresh look to greet all of the visitors that
will be coming into our town. (more)
East Prairie passes sales tax;
Browning, Austin, Farmer win R-1 seats
East Prairie voters passed the
one half of one percent sales tax Tuesday for
capital improvements and the operation and
maintenance of such improvements, including but not
limited to, storm drainage improvements. (more)
Fitzgerald wins Wyatt Mayor
race
Riley Fitzgerald was declared the
winner of the mayor’s race in Wyatt Wed-nesday over
Donald Williams, after election judges manually
recounted the ballots to prepare final certification
of the election results.
The unofficial results Tuesday
night put the two in a tie at 45 votes each.
According to County Clerk Junior
DeLay’s office, there were a couple of questionable
ballots found by the judges, questionable in that
the machine could have miscounted the results.
When those were corrected and the ballots
recounted, the result was 46 for Fitzgerald and 45
for Williams.
City of East Prairie Spring
Clean Up
The City Wide Cleanup will be
held on Wednesday, April 16 and Friday, April 18,
2008.
This is for residents inside the city limits of
East Prairie paying for trash pickup on their water
bills. (more)

Pageants
The Annual Dogwood-Azalea Beauty
Pageants will be held Monday, April 14, 2008 in the
Clara Drinkwater Newnam Auditorium in Charleston. (more)
Wallace struck by lightning
Charlie Wallace, Jr., of rural
East Prairie was struck by lightning on Thursday
evening, April 3, 2008. According to Sheriff Keith
Moore, Wallace was walking home with an umbrella
when he was struck by lightning. He received burns
and was taken to the St. Louis Burn Center. He has
been treated and released.
Kiwanis Pretty Baby Picture
Contest
The Kiwanis Pretty Baby Picture
contest will be held April 19 and 20 during the 40th
Annual Dogwood Azalea Festival.
The Contest is open for babies
ages 0 to 2 years.
Bring your pictures to Brink
Insurance, 206 East Commercial Street, Charleston,
before Friday, April 18 at 2:30 p.m.
Please put the name and phone
number of parents on the back of the picture.
Proceeds go to the Charleston
Kiwanis Scholarship Fund.
Its a penny per vote and $1.00
equals 100 votes, etc.
First place winner will receive a
$150 savings bond, 2nd place $100 savings bond and
third place $50 savings bond.
