East Prairie voters passed the
one half of one percent sales tax Tuesday for
capital improvements and the operation and
maintenance of such improvements, including but not
limited to, storm drainage improvements.
The vote was 284 in favor to 174
against. A simple majority was needed to pass,
according to County Clerk Junior DeLay.
This will enable the City of East
Prairie to complete applications to various state
and federal entities for grant funds to make major
repairs to the storm drainage system.
In the Charleston R-1 School
Board election Jim Browning, Sherry Austin and Earl
Farmer won over Leonard S. Gillespie and Clarence
"Sam" Zellars.
Browning received 452 votes,
Austin received 481 and Farmer 436. Leonard S.
Gillespie got 254 votes and Clarence "Sam" Zellars
received 384.
In the General Municipal Election
for the City of Charleston: Jack Feezor ran
unopposed and received 366 votes..
Unofficial returns for the City
of Wyatt’s race for Mayor, showed a tie between
Donald F. Williams and Riley E. Fitzgerald, Jr. with
45 each with two write-ins recorded by the
computerized counting machine.
After a recount Wednesday morning
by election judges, Fitzgerald received 46 votes to
45 for Williams. That tally will be the official,
certified result of the election (See Bulletin).
In the City of Wyatt Alderman
Ward I race, the winner was David Stephens with 27
votes to 23 for Clifton T. Cossey.
For Wyatt Alderman Ward II,
Robert J. Dugan, Sr., was running unopposed and
received 33 votes.
In the East Prairie R -2 School Board race, there
are four terms to be decided, three for three-year
terms and one for a one-year term. The three-year
terms were won by Ricky Penrod, Ron Howell, and
Steve Jones and the one-year term went to Eric C.
McGruder.
The vote was 388 for Penrod, 491
for Howell, and 487 for Jones, to 295 for Pat Helms,
281 for Stan Triplett, and 299 for Avery Lynn
Hutcheson. In the one-year-term race, Carlla Turnbo
received 322 votes to 137 for Jeffrey Bright and 354
for McGruder.
In the City of East Prairie
Municipal Election, Shirley Pritchett was reelected
to her position on the Board of Aldermen, Ward 1
over Jeffrey Bright with a vote of 88 for Pritchett
to 62 for Bright.
For Alderman Ward II: John
Arington, running unopposed, received 113 tallies
and in Ward III: Karen Coffer, running unopposed,
received 139 votes..
In the General Municipal Election
for Trustee for the Village of Wilson City, (vote
for three) Trent Lane received 14 votes, Marshall
Powell received 9 and Essie B. Jones received 11.
City of Bertrand: Alderman Ward
I, James L. Baker received 8 votes and in Ward II
Stephen McConkey received 34. Both were unopposed.
In the Anniston race for Mayor,
Lena Brown was the winner with 60 votes to 9 for
Clifton A. Henshaw.
Anniston Alderman Ward I, Betty
Jackson received 41 and Alderman Ward II Ladonna
Reno rceived 24. Both were unopposed.
General Municipal Election
Village of Pinhook: Trustee, (vote for three): Mary
Louise Williams received two votes and Cedric
Johnson, and Debra Tarver each received three.
In the Kelly R-4 School Board
election, (vote for three): Becky Wade, Tammy J.
Wadlington, and Greg Birk each received two
Mississippi County votes, while Joe Stuckey received
none.
Turnout for this election was a grim 21 percent,
according to DeLay. Only 1,722 voters out of 8,354
registered residents, turned out.
